ZagaEmpire Artist of the Week: ROHEES Is Making Music From the Things That Shape Him

Music can tell you a lot about the person behind it. For ROHEES, those stories often come from the things he sees, experiences and feels around him.

The Nigerian artist has built his sound around Afrobeats and Afrofusion, combining contemporary African rhythms with personal storytelling and cultural influences. Based in Lagos, ROHEES has continued to develop a style that gives him room to explore different sides of life while staying connected to his roots.

A major part of his identity as an artist is his approach to storytelling. ROHEES moves between English, Nigerian Pidgin and Yoruba, using language not just as a way to communicate but as part of the character of his music. His use of Yoruba expressions and cultural references has previously been highlighted as one of the strongest elements of his songwriting.

That storytelling has followed him through different stages of his catalogue. From his debut project Road To The Future to releases such as OVERSABI and SANKOFA, ROHEES has continued to explore themes around ambition, struggle, identity, relationships and everyday life.

What makes his music interesting is the way personal experiences can become bigger stories. Rather than limiting himself to one subject or mood, ROHEES allows different parts of his life and perspective to influence what he creates. That gives his catalogue room to move while keeping his storytelling at the centre.

His latest single, “DEMONS,” is another example of that approach. The record looks at pressure, uncertainty, disappointment, survival and the personal battles people often carry quietly. It shows ROHEES using music to process real experiences while creating something listeners can also see themselves in.

As ZagaEmpire’s Artist of the Week, ROHEES represents an artist still shaping his identity, growing through his experiences and turning those experiences into music.

And perhaps that is what makes his journey worth following: ROHEES is not simply making music about life — he is making music from the things that shape him.
