Review: On “Nine2Five,” DRE Knows Exactly Where He’s Going

There’s something refreshing about hearing an artist make music from exactly where they are in life, without pretending they have already arrived.

That honesty sits at the heart of DRE’s “Nine2Five.”

The record finds DRE documenting a period where the life he is currently living doesn’t completely match the life he sees for himself. But rather than sounding frustrated by it, he approaches that reality with confidence, patience and a clear hunger for more.

From the opening, DRE sounds comfortable on the record. His delivery carries an effortless confidence, while the mix of English, Yoruba and Nigerian Pidgin gives the song a natural feel that fits its everyday subject.

The hook is where “Nine2Five” really finds its centre.

“Grind today, ball tomorrow” is simple, memorable and immediately captures what the record is about. It is the kind of line that can live beyond the song because the idea behind it is something many listeners already understand.

There are other moments that make the writing work too. When DRE says, “I dey grind from Monday to Monday / I dey find money on a Sunday,” the song moves beyond the literal idea of a 9-to-5. It becomes a record about the constant pursuit of something better, whether you are working a regular job, building a business, creating, studying or simply trying to make things happen.

What makes “Nine2Five” enjoyable, however, is that DRE doesn’t turn that message into a motivational speech.

There is still plenty of personality and steeze throughout the record. Money stays on his mind, the confidence remains intact, and lines about his wrist, grills and eventually enjoying the rewards of his work give the song an aspirational edge.

Danexx’s production complements that approach well. The beat gives DRE enough space to deliver his lines clearly while maintaining the energy needed to make the record enjoyable outside of its message. Yung T beatz’s mixing and mastering also help bring everything together into a clean listen.

Perhaps the strongest thing about “Nine2Five” is its perspective. DRE isn’t presenting himself as someone who has figured everything out. He is documenting the journey while he is still in it.

And that makes the record feel believable.

“Nine2Five” understands that your current reality can be real without becoming your final destination. DRE knows where he is, knows where he wants to go, and for now, he is putting in the work required to get there.
