Spotify has announced a new “AI Persona” label designed to help listeners identify artist profiles that represent AI-generated identities rather than real people.
The new feature is part of Spotify’s efforts to improve transparency as artificial intelligence continues to play a bigger role in the music industry. The badge will focus on an artist’s public identity, including their name and images, rather than how their music was made. This means human artists who use AI tools while making music will not automatically receive the label.
Starting in mid-September, listeners will begin seeing the badge on selected artist profiles. It will appear next to artist names on profiles, in the About section, mobile Search results and track listings within playlists.
Artists can also disclose through Spotify for Artists that their profiles represent an “AI Persona.” However, Spotify will not depend only on voluntary disclosure. The platform will review profiles and identify those whose public identities appear to represent AI-generated photorealistic people.
Spotify will also limit how music from these profiles is recommended. By default, music from “AI Personas” will not appear in editorial or algorithmic recommendations unless a listener shows intentional interest, such as following the artist.
If Spotify identifies a profile itself, the artist may receive a “Likely AI Persona” badge. The artist will be notified through Spotify for Artists and can either confirm the classification or appeal the decision if they believe it was applied incorrectly.
The move comes as AI-generated artist identities become more common across music streaming platforms. With the new system, Spotify aims to make it clearer to listeners whether the artist behind a profile represents a real person or an AI-generated identity.
