Beninese music legend Angélique Kidjo has made history as the first Black African artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, adding another major achievement to her remarkable career.
Kidjo received the honour in the Recording category, recognising her decades of work in music and her influence in taking African sounds and culture to audiences around the world.
The five-time Grammy Award winner has built a career spanning more than four decades, blending African sounds with genres including jazz, funk, R&B and pop. She has also worked with several international stars while consistently using her music and platform to promote African culture.
During her acceptance speech, Kidjo spoke about Africa’s important contribution to music around the world.
“We Africans just don’t know what we’ve given to the world, and what we continue giving to the world for the music to exist. Without us, there’s no music possible on this planet.”
The Hollywood Walk of Fame recognition is not only another major moment for Kidjo but also a historic achievement for African music on the global stage.
With the honour, Angélique Kidjo further strengthens her legacy as one of Africa’s most respected and influential music figures, while opening another door for African artists internationally.
