The legal battle involving Jude Okoye, the former manager of P-Square and elder brother to Peter Okoye (Mr P) and Paul Okoye (Rudeboy), became one of the biggest entertainment stories in Nigeria after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) filed money laundering charges against him.
The case followed years of public disagreements between the Okoye brothers over royalties, business management, and financial transparency.
How the Family Dispute Started
Jude Okoye managed P-Square during the group’s successful run, helping build one of Africa’s biggest music brands. However, after the group first split in 2017 and reunited briefly before separating again, disagreements over finances continued.
In August 2023, Peter Okoye filed a petition with the EFCC, alleging that royalties belonging to P-Square had been diverted through Northside Music Ltd., a company reportedly owned by Jude Okoye and his wife, Ifeoma Okoye.
Peter maintained that his complaint was against Jude and his wife, not against his twin brother, Paul Okoye.
Jude denied all the allegations.
EFCC Charges Against Jude Okoye
Following its investigation, the EFCC arraigned Jude Okoye and Northside Music Ltd. before the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos, on seven counts of alleged money laundering.
According to the anti-graft agency, the charges involve:
- Alleged laundering of ₦1.38 billion, $1 million, and £34,537.59.
- The alleged purchase of an ₦850 million property in Ikoyi with proceeds believed to be from unlawful activities.
- The alleged conversion of over $1 million into naira through a bureau de change and distribution of the funds across multiple bank accounts.
Jude pleaded “not guilty” to all charges.
Court Proceedings
After his arraignment, Justice Alexander Owoeye ordered that Jude Okoye be remanded while his bail application was considered.
His legal team, led by Inibehe Effiong, argued for bail, while the EFCC asked the court to proceed with trial.
The court later fixed dates for the bail ruling and subsequent trial.
Reactions from the Okoye Family
The court case attracted widespread reactions across social media.
Paul Okoye (Rudeboy) publicly expressed support for Jude while making comments that suggested the family’s financial issues were more complicated than they appeared.
Peter Okoye, on the other hand, maintained that he acted because he wanted transparency and accountability regarding the group’s finances.
The case also sparked conversations within Nigeria’s entertainment industry about artist management, royalties, and financial accountability.
Why the Case Matters
Beyond the family dispute, the EFCC case has become an important story for Nigeria’s music industry.
