Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has shared his experience of representing Nigeria, revealing some of the differences between playing for the Super Eagles and England.
Speaking on the High Performance podcast, the Fulham star explained that England’s national team setup is more organized and follows stricter rules. However, he made it clear that he is still proud to wear the Nigerian jersey.
“Playing for England and playing for Nigeria are very different. England’s a bit more strict. In St George’s Park or in a hotel, no one’s allowed to come in, strict food, strict regime that’s it.”
Iwobi also spoke about some of the logistical challenges he has experienced while on international duty with Nigeria.
“Sometimes your flight’s not booked properly. You have to book your own flight. You get there and sometimes the people at the airport are not ready to pick you up, so sometimes you have to make your own way.”
He added that there have also been occasions when players faced issues with accommodation and other basic facilities.
“The hotels are OK. Sometimes the light goes out; sometimes you don’t have anywhere to charge your phone. England, no one’s allowed in the hotel. Nigeria, people can come into your room whenever they want.”
Despite the challenges, Iwobi said he has no regrets about choosing to represent Nigeria after featuring for England at youth level before switching his international allegiance in 2015.
“It took a lot of convincing. I have no regrets. I did love England, but because I grew up in a Nigerian household, Nigeria has always been a part of me.”
Since making the switch, Iwobi has established himself as one of the Super Eagles’ key players and has earned nearly 100 appearances for the Nigerian national team.
