Lionel Messi has explained why he became emotional after Argentina’s dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over Egypt in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Argentina captain admitted that his tears came from feeling guilty after missing a first-half penalty, before helping his team complete an incredible comeback.
Speaking after the match, Messi said:
“I cried because I felt that I let my teammates down because of the penalty I missed and the way I took it. But thankfully, once again, God had something special for me in the end. I’m very happy.”
Argentina came from two goals behind to avoid a shock exit. Cristian Romero scored to start the comeback, Messi found the equaliser, and Enzo Fernández headed in the winning goal deep into stoppage time to send the defending champions into the quarter-finals.
Reflecting on the team’s determination, Messi added:
“We didn’t want and didn’t deserve to go home. We could not let it end like that. This group really deserved to keep going. We never give up. Never.”
Argentina will now face Switzerland in the quarter-finals as they continue their bid to retain the FIFA World Cup title.
