UEFA Criticizes FIFA Over Decision to Lift Folarin Balogun’s Red Card Suspension

UEFA has strongly criticized FIFA after the world football governing body decided to suspend Folarin Balogun’s automatic one-match ban following his red card at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In an official statement released on Monday, UEFA described FIFA’s decision as “unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable.” The organization said the move could damage the integrity of the game and create a dangerous precedent for future tournaments.

Balogun was shown a red card during the United States’ win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, a dismissal that normally carries an automatic one-match suspension under FIFA’s disciplinary rules. However, FIFA later suspended the ban for a one-year probationary period, making the striker available for the USA’s Round of 16 clash against Belgium.

Reacting to the decision, UEFA said FIFA had “crossed a red line,” insisting that an automatic suspension after a red card is a basic football rule that should not be changed during a major competition. UEFA also warned that changing such rules could affect the fairness and credibility of the tournament while setting a precedent for similar disciplinary cases in the future.
