Chelsea Agree Deal for Marco Palestra as Xabi Alonso Nears First Signing

June 24, 2026

Chelsea are reportedly close to completing the signing of Italian defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta after reaching an agreement worth around Β£47.5 million (€55 million). The 21-year-old is expected to become the first major signing under new manager Xabi Alonso.

Reports suggest Chelsea beat Inter Milan to the defender’s signature, with only final paperwork and a medical examination left before the deal is completed.

Palestra caught the attention of several top clubs following an impressive loan spell at Cagliari during the 2025/26 season. He made 37 Serie A appearances, scored one goal, and provided four assists while showcasing his ability to play on both sides of the defense.

The young defender came through Atalanta’s academy and has quickly developed into one of Italy’s most promising talents. His performances reportedly earned him Serie A Defender of the Year recognition and helped him break into the senior Italian national team, where he has already made two appearances.

Palestra’s arrival could also affect Chelsea’s current squad, with reports linking Malo Gusto with a possible move away from the club amid interest from Manchester City.

As Chelsea continues rebuilding under Alonso, the signing of Palestra highlights the club’s focus on bringing in young and versatile players ahead of the new season.
