February 3, 2026

The 68th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles celebrated Africa’s growing influence on the global music stage, with historic wins for several African artists.

Legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti became the first African artist to receive a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. The late musician’s children—Yeni, Kunle, Shalewa, and Femi Kuti—accepted the honour on his behalf. Yeni shared a heartfelt moment, saying, “I’m sure my father is smiling down on us,” honoring their father’s monumental legacy.

South African star Tyla also had a remarkable night, winning her second Grammy for Best African Music Performance with her single “Push 2 Start.” She beat an incredible lineup, including Burna Boy (“Love”), Davido featuring Omah Lay (“With You”), Ayra Starr featuring Wizkid (“Gimme Dat”), and Eddy Kenzo & Mehran Matin (“Hope & Love”).

Nigerian-American artist Shaboozey won Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “Amen” alongside Jelly Roll. In his emotional speech, Shaboozey, of Igbo-Nigerian descent, paid tribute to his mother and highlighted the contributions of immigrants in the United States, saying, “immigrants literally built this country.”

While other African stars like Angélique Kidjo, Burna Boy, and Youssou N’dour didn’t win this year, the presence of African talent and excellence was celebrated throughout the weekend.
