Police aircraft crashes in eastern Kenya (photos)

A light Kenyan police aircraft carrying a security team to a meeting in Marsabit, crash-landed in the eastern region of Meru in the early hours of Saturday June 13.

 

The Eastern Regional commissioner and his security team were reportedly heading for a joint security meeting with North Eastern counterparts when the incident occurred.  Police spokesman Charles Owino said the chopper had six occupants, 2 pilots and 4 passengers-all members of Eastern Security committee.

The injured passengers have been admitted at Meru Level 5 hospital. Police Airwing Commandant Rodgers Mbithi said he and the pilot in the ill-fated chopper left Wilson airport in Nairobi with two choppers heading for the meeting.

 

Mbithi who was on a different chopper said;

 

“I have talked to the pilot and he, with the others, who were on board are okay and are in stable condition.”

It is speculated that the chopper which is among the new fleets acquired by police crashed due to bad weather. Investigation has been launched into the incident.
